It tried to determine if the extract of the fruiting spikes is capable of causing sedation and hypnosis. It also identified the dose needed to sedate the test animals as well as to produce hypnosis. Also, observation on the onset of action of the plant extract when administered to Swiss mice was known and the effect of the extract on the normal sleep pattern was verified. The experimental research design was employed to gather data for the study. The active constituent present in the fruiting spikes of cogon extract was an alkaloid. The fruiting spikes extract possessed sedative-hypnotic property when administered to Swiss mice as test animals. One (1.0) ml of the boiled extract produced sedation while in doubling the dose, there was already production of sleep. the sedative-hypnotic agent induces sleep pattern was altered. With the use of the cogon fruiting spikes extract, the time of sleep is prolonged and sleeping becomes more frequent. Hypnosis was clearly verified through positive results shown by the Swiss mice upon subjected to different parameters.
