ABSTRACT LEONARDOR, AXEL CARLO J., RAMAJO, INA FELIZE A., SIBULAO, SARRA SHAYNE T. Undergraduate Thesis. ANTILITHIATIC ACTIVITY OF CALAMANSI (Citrus microcarpa Bunge) JUICE ON ETHYLENE GLYCOL-INDUCED NEPHROLITHIASIS IN MALE GUINEA PIGS Adviser. Kristian Gay Y. Dutdut The study was conducted to determine the antilithiatic activity of calamansi (Citrus microcarpa Bunge) juice. The effectiveness of the juice to lower creatinine and uric acid levels was compared to a standard drug and distilled water. This study used ethylene glycol induced hyperoxaluria model in male guinea pigs to test the antilithiatic activity of the different concentrations (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%) of Calamansi (Citrus microcarpa Bunge) juice and to determine which concentration exhibited the best results. Results of the study revealed that the different concentrations of Calamansi (Citrus microcarpa Bunge) juice can lower both creatinine and uric acid levels of thet test animals. Of all the treatment concentrations, the 50% treatment concentration showed the best effect in lowering creatinine levels while the 25% treatment concentration showed the best effect in lowering uric acid levels. Moreover, based on the results gathered, the Calamansi (Citrus microcarpa Bunge) juice exhibited better antilithiatic activity than that of the commercial drug (potassium citrate). The Calamansi (Citrus microcarpa Bunge) juice can be attributed to the presence of citric acid. Oral intake of citric acid boots levels of citrate in the urine and reduce the crystallization of uric acid and calcium oxalate – the most frequently found ingredient in kidney stones. Based on the results, the researchers therefore conclude that the juice obtaines from the Calamansi (Citrus microcarpa Bunge) fruit is an effective alternative treatment for nephrolithiasis.
