Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, City of Batac 2906, Ilocos Norte, March 2010. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF KALUNAI (Amaranthus viridis linn.) LEAF EXTRACT OF ANEMIA INDUCED GUINEA PIGS Adviser: Ma Danica A. Ines, RPh
This study was undertaken to determine the potential of Kalunai (Amaranthus viridis linn.) leaf extract as anti-anemia effect in female guinea pigs. Ceric sulphate titration method using 0.1 N CeSO4 was conducted to serve as assay to determine the presence of iron. Parameters used to determine if there is an anti-anemia effect in the haemoglobin, haematocrit, RBC and WBC levels of the female guinea pigs after the administration of the different treatments. Kalunai leaf extract as the control group, Beefer Plus as the positive control and distilled water as negative control. Using Ceric sulphate titration, iron is present in the extract with the average volume of 2.06 ml. the kalunai leaf extract showed that there is no significant difference with the positive control in terms of effectiveness in increasing Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, RBC and WBC in the anemia induced guinea pigs. The positive control and the kalunai leaf extract are not effective in decreasing the WBC of the test animals.
