This study investigates the morphological characterization of clay and sand,
from various towns across Ilocos Norte, Philippines. Employing scanning electron
microscopy, the research examines the structural attributes of these materials, aiming
to identify variations among different locales. Clay and sand samples from 23 towns
were collected and analyzed to assess their particle size and morphology. The findings
reveal distinct morphological features: plate structures predominant in Adams,
Pagudpud, Solsona, Marcos, Laoag, Carasi, Pasuquin, and Bangui; fibrous structures
identified in San Nicolas and Nueva Era; and aggregate structures prevalent in Bacarra,
Banna, Batac, Badoc, Burgos, Currimao, Dumalneg, Dingras, Pinili, Piddig, Paoay,
Sarrat, and Vintar. Notably, plate structures exhibit suitability for pottery and ceramic
production, fibrous structures for refractories, and aggregate structures for construction
and manufacturing purposes. The measurements of particle size of clay range from
90.099 to 99.502 μm. On the other hand, sand particle size ranges from 96.918 to
99.972μm. Ilocos Norte clay, particularly solsona clay and commercial kaolin clay
share a similar plate structure that makes them suitable for various ceramic
applications, including earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. Solsona clay contain
larger and more uniformly shaped kaolinite particles, leading to a more distinct plate
like arrangement. In contrast, kaolin clay particles may vary in size and shape, resulting
in a less defined structure. This study is motivated by the need to optimize the
utilization of local geological materials for industrial and economic development.
