The Antifungal Activity of the Rice Husks (Oryza Sativa) extract. Undergraduate Theses. College of Health Sciences. Department of Pharmacy, Mariano Marcos State University, Batac 2906 Ilocos Norte, 38 pp. Adviser: Janelyn P. Viado The study focused on the phytochemical screening of the active constituent rice husk, Oryza sativa. The rice husk was extracted using the reflux condenser and heated over a steam bath to seperate the active constituents from the solvent. The obtained extract was subjected to preliminary screening to test for the presence of alkoids. The actual results conformed to the presence of alkaloids. The actual results conformed to the expected results giving a positive indication that the extract contained alkaloid. The Potato Dextrose Agar was used and served as a culture media for both fungi. After the culture media was solidified, the inoculated fungi were smeared on the petri dishes made in three replicates. Eight-filter discs were placed in each petri dish impregnated with the different concentrations. The seeded test plates were incubated for three days to let the growth of fungi. Observations were made and inhibition zones were measured in each plate. The treatment culture and control plates were placed at room temperature for four days for further observation. Measurement on the inhibition zones was made on the seventh day to determine its antifungal activity. Based on the results, 100% concentrations for both fungi, Candida albicans and Trichophyton rubrum, exhibited fungicidal activity while the 75% concentrations exerted fungistatic activity.
