Expansion of summary note AGPALZA, CZAREN LOREEN JOY C., CARIAGA, CARMELITA D., RAMIREZ, RONA U. 2011., Undergraduate Thesis. Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, City of Batac 2906, Ilocos Norte) Adviser: Ms. Kristian Gay Y. Dutdut Co-Adviser: Ms. Janelyn Viado-Rojas
Population control is a worldwide concern, including the Philippines, especially since it is one of the overpopulated countries of Asia. Such efforts are devoted to the search for antifertility drugs from the country’s rich flora to replace the synthetic contraceptive pills which are not only quite expensive but also produce undesirable side effects. This study deals with the antifertility effects of the leaf extract of Averrhoa bilimbi L. company known as Kamias. This study was initiated to prevent and lessen the growing number of unwanted pregnancy in the country through alternative ways without producing any undesirable effect to the person and provide an infertility agent that is not quite expensive and without violating the words of Christian religion. The crude extract of the Kamias was obtained through maceration. Trust, a commercial drug was used as the standard drug, and distilled water as the negative control group. Female swiss mice were divided into four groups, wherein, each group consists of one female swiss and 2 male swiss mice. The first and second group were treated with kamias leaf extract with a dose of 300 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg respectively. Data were subjected to analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Statistical analysis revealed that there is a a significant difference on the antifertility activity between the Kamias leaf extract (KLE) and the negative control which is the distilled water. The two doses of the KLE were also compared and it was revealed that KLE yields the highest antifertility activity at a dose of 500 mg/kg compared to that the 300 mg/kg. it was also observed that KLE has no significant difference with that of the positive control (Trust pills) hence, KLE and Trust pill has the same antifertility activity.
