520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. ABSTRACT CARIAGA, DAN MAR P. 2019. Status of Fish Processing in the Coastal Barangays of Badoc, Ilocos Norte. Undergraduate Thesis. College of Agriculture, Food and Sustainable Development. Mariano Marcos State University, City of Batac 2906 Ilocos Norte. 56pp. Adviser: Dr. Genevieve I. Magano The major concern of the study was to look into the status of the fish processing industry in the coastal barangays of Badoc, Ilocos Norte. Specifically, it aimed to: 1) determine the socio-demographic profile of the fish processors; 2) identify the processed products; 3) determine the packaging materials used by the processors; 4) identify the support services provided to the processors, and 5) identify the problems encountered by the fish processors. Thirty registered fish processors in Badoc, Ilocos Norte served as respondents. A structured interview guide was used in gathering information. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts and percentages. Majority of the fish processors belonged in the middle age bracket, married, had undergone formal education, and were females, with a medium number of household members. Processed products were fish paste/fish sauce and dried fish. Raw materials were from the open sea and were processed seasonally. The fish paste/fish sauce produced by the processors was stored in a drum for the fermentation, after which it was put in bottles for marketing. The dried fish, on the 1938 07ASAR) Men Pampa2018 longer life span other hand, is placed in plastic containers to ensure the quality of the product. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) and the Local Government Unit of Badoc, Ilocos Norte, provided support in different forms to the fish processors who were also members of the Rural Improvement Club (RIC). The most serious problem that the processors encountered was the seasonality of supply because the commonly used raw materials are only available during a specific season. Quality control of products was not strictly observed due to lack of knowledge and skills of the processors. Thus, the processors cannot gain higher prices for their products. Minor problems encountered were on sanitation of the processing activities, and utensils were not put inside cabinets to ensure safety and sanitation from crawling insects and animals. The following are the recommendations: training on quality control, identification of alternative fish for processing and other byproducts; canning, marketing. Likewise, organizing the fish processors will be of great help to empower them and ensure sustainability.
