Summary, etc. ABSTRACT
FAYLOGA, KHRISTELYN U. 2019. Germplasm Collection and
Evaluation of Lantana camara in Selected Municipalities of Ilocos Norte.
Undergraduate Thesis. College of Agriculture, Food and Sustainable Development.
Mariano Marcos State University. City of Batac 2906 Ilocos Norte. 57pp.
Adviser: Prof. Maura Luisa S. Gabriel

The study on the Germplasm Collection and Evaluation of Lantana camara in
Selected Municipalities of Ilocos Norte was conducted in five municipalities of the
province of Ilocos Norte, namely, Pagudpud, Bangui, Burgos, Adams and Dumalneg
from December 2018 to January 2019. Twenty-two accessions were randomly
selected. The study aimed to a) characterize Lantana camara grown in selected
municipalities of Ilocos Norte; b) determine the variability of Lantana camara grown
in selected municipalities of Ilocos Norte; c) identify lantana plants with outstanding
flowering characteristics as ornamental plant; d) establish germplasm collection of
different varieties of lantana; and e) develop a descriptors list for Lantana camara.
Results showed that most (59.09%) of the lantana plants were grown in the
roadside. Furthermore, all of the lantana plants were located in a flat area. Most
(59.09%) of the lantana plants were grown at the roadside areas, compared to 40.91%
that were grown at grassland. Result also showed that all the accessions were grown
in the wild. Further, the growth habit of the sample plants was spreading.
On the other hand, it was observed that the leaves of the sample plants were
all the simple type. In addition, 57.55% of the plants exhibited intermediate leaf
length of 5-6 cm. Findings also showed that leaf shape of the lantana generally
exhibited ovate leaves (50.00%) and cordate (45.45%). However, the leaves of the
plants were arranged in opposite manner. For the leaf apex, results showed that most
(77.27%) were acute. Moreover, leaf margin of the sample plants were all serrate.
The lantana plants generally exhibited a rounded (50%) and cordate (40.91) leaf base.
In this study, majority of the studied sample flowers of the lantana plants
exhibited pink color (45.45%). These accessions were widely distributed in all the
selected municipalities studied. Furthermore, lantana plants with outstanding
flowering characteristics as ornamental plants were identified in eight different color
types, namely, pink, ornamental orange, white, ornamental white, pink with yellow
orange, ornamental yellow, red, and pale pink with yellow. These accessions were
considered promising ornamental plants, which showed potential characteristics that
can be used for further evaluation for possible registration as commercial variety.
Inflorescence characteristics were noted wherein, the flower shape and
inflorescence type of the different accessions were identified as salverform and
simple umbel, respectively. Moreover, the size of the floret ranged from 0.7-1.5 cm
with a mean of 1.15 cm and it was noted that 86.36% generally exhibited
intermediate. Results also showed that most (54.55%) were generally medium in the
number of florets per cluster. Fruit color of the lantana plant was noted. The fruits were green when unripe
and black when ripe. Results also showed that fruit of lantana was identified as berry.
