Dutdut The crude extract of Okra (Hibiscus esculentus) fruit has been evaluated for its ability to serve as a gastroprotective agent in 20 ethanol-induced ulcerated female Swiss mice. the study was also conducted to determine the different constituents present in the plant sample through phytochemical screening. Two types of Okra (fresh and dehydrated) were used in the study to identify which would give a greater percentage yield. Results showed that there is no significant difference between the two. Dose of 500 mg/day AD, 300 mg/day AD and 100 mg/day AD of the crude extract of Okra fruit and distilled water employed as the negative control used in the study. Gastric ulcer in the test animals were induced orally with ethanol. Results showed significant difference between the Okra fruit crude extract and distilled water in their gastroprotective activity in the ethanol-induced ulcerated Swiss mice. It was found that the dose treatments 500 and 300 mg/day AD of the crude extract were the most effective dose in producing gastroprotection in ethanol-induced ulcerated Swiss mice.
