Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, Batac City 2906 Ilocos Norte, October 2007. THE COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE ANTI-FUNGAL EFFECT OF THE TWO VARIETIES OF BANANA TRUNK EXTRACTS: CARDAVA (Musa aparadesiaca) and DWARF CAVENDISH (Musa Acuminata) AGAINST (Trichophyton Mentagrophytes)
65 pp
Thesis Adviser: Mr. Augustus Caesar Pati
Comparisaon between the antifungal effects of banna trunk extract: Cardava (Musa aparadesiaca) and Dwarf Cavendish (Musa Acuminata) against a pathogenic fungi, Trichophyton Mentagrophytes has been investigated in this research study. Their effectiveness as antifungal agents was examined thru microbial assay using the filter disc method and was conducted from August to October 2007.Experimental research design was used for the study. Maceration and Condensed Refluxation were used to obtain the trunk extract. Active constituents possessing antifungal actions were determined thru Phytochemical Test. To observe fungal growth inhibition, the trunk extract. Active constituents possessing antifungal actions were determined thru extracts were prepared with following concentrations, 25&, 50%, 75% and 100%. For precise comparison, the extracts were compared the action of Clotrimazole (Canesten) as positive control and distilled water as negative control. The result of phytochemical screening of the two varieties indicated that both the extracts do not contain alkaloids yet saponins, tannins and flavonoids were present. Mean inhibition zones showed that the 75% concentration of Dwarf Cavendish exhibited the greatest inhibition of Trichophyton Mentagrophytes while in Cardava the greatest inhibition zone was from its pure extract concentration. Statistical analysis finally stated that among the two varieties used, Dwarf Cavendish has greater affinity to fight Trichophyton Mentagrophytes.
