Expansion of summary note Duerme, Jacqueline A., Melchor, Josie V., Torida, Kathleen M., Torida, Kristen M., Tugaoen, Cielito D., Verlim, Vermillie L.; Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, Batac City 2906 Ilocos Norte, October 2000, Antiseptic Activity of the Crude Extracts from the Roots of Eggplants (Solanum Melongena Linn)
THESIS ADVISER: MRS. MAGDALENA B. LAGUA
46 pp
Alkaloids are of pharmaceutically importance. This is the primary reason why studies regarding alkaloids must be given emphasis. However, some plant sources that contain alkaloids are not yet utilized and developed, therefore, extraction of the alkaloids from the air-dried roots of eggplant was made. The study focused on the extraction of the of the sonstituents of the roots of eggplant Solanum melongena Linn. (Family Solanaceae) as an anti septic agent using Soxhlet Extraction Apparatus. The eggplant extract were subjected to preliminary test, confirmatory test, quaternary bases for alkaloids, physical and chemical test. The therapeutic value as to its antiseptic effect was tested on Swiss mice and compared to standard, Povidone-iodine 10% solution. The need for further studies on the alkaloidal contents of the eggplant roots is recommended, formulation of dosage form and the isolation of its primary alkaloids constituent. And the more extensive studies be undertaken to the plant as a whole to explore the other parts which are of medicinal value.
