| Summary, etc. | ABSTRACT BUCALIG et al.,2020. Design and Analysis of Vertical Axis Helical Hydrokinetic Turbine for a Run-off River . Undergraduate Thesis. College of the Engineering, Mariano Marcos State University. City of Batac 2906 Ilocos Norte. pp. 38. Adviser: Engr. Rigor G. Gabur Run-off river hydroelectricity is a type of generation whereby little or no water storage is provided. It is considered ideal for streams or rivers but during dry seasons wherein water level will be much lower efficiency will also become lower. In recent years, turbines are under progressive development to increase torque and efficiency for low speed velocity applications with output power. Professor Alexander Gorlov developed a helical turbine designed for low fluid flow rates. In this study a helical turbine was designed for run-off river application. The torque was maximized to come up with the helical angle of the blade. The number of blades and solidity was based from past studies wherein the 3 bladed turbines and a solidity of 0.3-0.4 produced better output. From these values the other parameters were derived. The researchers came up with 0.8m height, 0.5m diameter and chord length of 0.025m. Assuming there were no losses in the turbine, the efficiency obtained was 61.8% at 1 m/s, 38.6% at 0.8 m/s and 20.5% at 0.5 m/s. The design can generate up to 1069.2 kW-hr annually with a 14.66% rate of return as a battery charging station. Thus, the helical turbine design was an efficient design that can function in slower flow rates based on the calculations.
