Summary, etc. ABSTRACT KIAY, RODEL JAYLORD R., and SORIANO, ARIANE ARETHA A. 2021. Biodiversity Assessment of Peridophytes and Epiphytes in Mt. Mawakwakar, Banna, Ilocos Norte. Undergraduate Thesis. College of Agriculture, Food and Sustainable Development Mariano Marcos State University, City of Batac 2906, Ilocos Norte. 53 pp Adviser: Mr. Elmer Francis A. Morales The study was conducted in Mt. Mawakwakar, Banna, Ilocos Norte from January 2021 to March 2021. The study aimed to (a) assess and document the diversity of Preridophytes and Epiphytes of Mt. Mawakwakar, (b) determine the physico-chemical parameters that influence the diversity of Peridophytes and Epiphytes, (c) compare the diversity index of Pteridopyles and Epiphyles at different elevations. The highest elevation of Mt. Mawakwakar is 1098 meters above sea level (masl), the study was divided into three stations, specifically base, middle and top. Top ridge is the peak of the mountain with 832-1,098 masl. The middle of the mountain with 566-832 masl and lastly the bottom, starting from 300-566 masl where pteridophyles and epiphytes are located. For each station, five sampling plots were established along a 100m transect line. Samplings were conducted with an interval of 10 meters to determine the species diversity of Pteridophytes and Epiphytes. Within the laid transect line and established sampling plots, all kinds of Peridophytes and Epiphytes were counted, recorded and documented for identification Results show that there were 20 species of Pteridophytes identified, namely: Acrostichum speciosum, Adantium capillus-veneris, Athyrium sp. Christella dentata, Christella parasitica, Cetoperis bulbifera, Davallia repens, Diplazium esculentum, Dnopteris erythrosora, Matteuccia struthiopteris, Nephrolepis biserrata, Nephrolepis brown, Nephrolepis cordifolia, Nephrolepis obliterata, Onoclea sensibilis, Polystichum aculeatum, Pohistichum braunii, Sphaeropteris cooperi, Tectaria decurrens copel, and Thelypteris torresiana coll. On the other hand, seven species of Epiphytes were identified, namely: Aglaomorpha quercifolia, Dendrobium amosmum, Drynaria quercifolia, Drynaria sparsisora, Epipremnum pinnatum, Nephrolepis sp, and Oncidium sphacelatum The physico-chemical parameters (soil temperature, soil moisture, soil pH, air temperature, relative humidity and light intensity) were determined at the different elevations. Soil temperature ranged from 22.2°C - 27.2°C, soil moisture ranged from 6.94%-10.19%, soil pH ranged from 6.06 - 7.36, air temperature ranged from 24°C - 26,3°C, relative humidity ranged from 82.2% - 88%, while light intensity ranged from 1036.8-2948.8 (Lux). In terms of species diversity, the top ridge had the most diverse for Pteridophytes and base of the mountain for Epiphytes. The diversity indices for Pteridophytes were 1.98, 194, 1.99 for the base, middle and top ridge, respectively. It was observed that the base elevation of the mountain had the most diverse for species of Epiphytes with diversity index of 1.67 followed by top elevation with 1.59 and the least diverse elevation is in the middle with 1.25.
