| Summary, etc. | ABSTRACT ANTALAN, MEROSE D. and FERNANDEZ, APPLE JOYCE F. M. 2021. Diversity Assessment of Aquatic Vertebrates in the Mangrove Area of Davila, Pasaquin, Ilocos Norte. Undergraduate Thesis, College of Agriculture, Food and Sustainable Development. Mariano Marcos State University, City of Batac, Ilocos Norte. 54pp Adviser: Mr. Elmer Francis A. Morales The study was conducted from February to March 2021 in the mangrove area of Davila, Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte during the full moon and new moon phases. The study established a Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) designated in two sampling stations namely natural and established stand to identify the different species thriving in the area. The study aimed to determine and document the aquatic vertebrates in the area; determine the physico-chemical parameters of the area; and correlate the physico-chemical parameters to the diversity of aquatic vertebrates in the area. Based on the result of the study, there were 41 species of aquatic vertebrates. Pony fish (Sphaeramia orbicularis) was the most dominant in the mangrove area. The family of Apogonidae was the most abundant for both new moon and full moon phases. The observed variation, however, was not statistically significant. The economic value of the species could be a possible explanation for their abundance. Furthermore, the diversity index of the aquatic vertebrates revealed that during the full moon phases, the established stand had the most species (26) and also the highest value on the diversity index with a value of 1.32, this reflects very low diversity. The evenness value is 0.40 which means low evenness. During the new moon phase, the natural stand had the fewest species (11) and the lowest value on the diversity index with the value of 0.82. The evenness is low as reflected in the value of 0.34. In addition, there were species of aquatic vertebrates which were present in the sampling station but absent in other stations and as observed, more species thrive in the established stand. Fewer species were caught in the natural stand where the area was near the community. Based on the results of the monitoring, all the physico-chemical parameters have significant relationship between the sampling period (moon phase) and sampling station Results of the physico-chemical parameter in general also indicate highly significant relationship with the biological parameters. These findings, along with the general richness of aquatic animals in the mangrove area, point to the necessity for additional research, i.e., a longer sample time. The preliminary findings of this study, however, can be used as a foundation for managing fishing resources in the estuary area. This can serve as a baseline for future ecological studies. |
