THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SEMI PURIFIED GLYCOSIDES OBTAINED FROM THE PULP OF SQUASH (Cucurbita Maxima, Cucurbitaceae) AGAINST EARTHWORMS (Pheritima Posthuma). Adviser: Imelda B. Corpuz<br/>Human infection caused by worms (helminthes) represents one of the most important public health problems especially in third world country like Philippines. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of glycosides obtained from squash (Cucurbita Maxima)and to collect data for the study. A higher percentage of crude extract was yielded from the reflux method compared to maceration method of extraction. Confirmatory test are used to confirm the presence of glycosides in the plant sample. Isolation of glycosides using Lead method was performed and obtained a semi purified product. Solubility testing was also conducted to determine the solubility of the semi purified glycosides to various organic solvents used. Eartworm was used due to its anatomical and physiological resemblance with the intestinal roundworm parasites of human being. Three treatment groups were used in the study with three different concentrations (9.8mg/ml, 6.7 mg/ml, and 4.2mg/ml) except in the control group. Thirty Five (35) earthworms was used, five (5) earthworms as to the fifteen (15) earthworms as to the plant sample control. All experiments were performed at the same time to avoid variations. Based on the statistical analysis (ANOVA) there was a significant difference as to the negative control (distilled water) and plant sample control (glycosides), there was a significant difference as to the negative control and the positive control (mebendazole), and there was no significant difference as to the positive control and plant sample control. All the concentrations of the sample control group are effective against (Pheritima posthuma). <br/>
