Cabato, Jorell Jess A., Salmasan, Sinamar Jasmin L., Teodoro, Michelle Carmen P., Undergraduate Thesis. Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, City of Batac 2906, Ilocos Norte, March 2010. ANTI-OBESITY PROPERTY OF MULLACA (Physalis Angulata) ROOT EXTRACT Adviser: Ma. Danica A. Ines
The study on the obesity activity of Mullaca (Physalis angulata) root extract was conducted to confirm the phytochemical substances present in the plant sample. Likewise, the effectiveness of the Mullaca (Physalis angulata) root extract in lowering fasting blood sugar (FBS), triglyceride, cholesterol, and weight in obesity-induced albino rats is also determined. Two different concentrations (50% and 100%) of Mullaca (Physalis angulata) root extract were used in the study and their effects were analysed and compared. Orlistat (120mg), distilled water, and 50% and 100% concentrations of Mullaca (Physalis angulata) root extract were administered orally. The four parameters (FBS, triglycerides, cholesterol, and weight) were monitored every seven days for 40 days. The data gathered were statistically analysed using ANOVA. Based on the statistical analysis of the data gathered, both 50% and 100% concentrations of Mullaca (Physalis angulata) root extract are effective in lowering the levels of the four obesity-induced albino rats, however, 100% concentrations of Mullaca (Physalis angulata) root extract exerted the greater anti-obesity activity. Also, the effectiveness varies over time. The longer the time of treatment, the higher is the effectiveness of the two concentrations. The 50% and 100% Mullaca (Physalis angulata) root extract has a significant difference compared to the positive control (Orlistat 120mg) and the negative control (distilled water) in their anti-obesity effect. This shows that the positive control is still the most effective among the four treatments yet the 50% and 100% concentrations shows effectiveness next to the positive control and is more effective than the negative control in lowering the FBS, triglyceride, cholesterol level, and in reducing weight in obesity-induced albino rats.
|
