ANGELO VICENZO C. ALBANAO, KARL HOWARD G. MARTIN, BLESILDA O. YABIS. Undergraduate Thesis. Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, City of Batac 2906, Ilocos Norte, March 2010 ANTISEIZURE PROPERTY POMELO (CITRUS GRANDIS LINN.) LEAF EXTRACT ON TRAMADOL-INDUCED SEIZURES ON SWISS MICE Adviser: Aileen O. Camangeg; Co-adviser: Janelyn Viado-Rojas
The study was conducted to investigate the anti-seizure property of Property Pomelo (Citrus Grandis Linn.) Leaf Extract on Tramadol-induced seizures on male and female Swiss mice. The study made use of an experimental method of research using descriptive and qualitative analyses to characterize and qualitative analyses to characterize the active constituents present in the Property Pomelo Leaf Extract. The results show that alkaloids, carbohydrates, condensed tannins, and proteins are present in the Property Pomelo (Citrus Grandis Linn.) Leaf Extract. Furthermore, the quantitative analysis was also employed to present the data obtained in the pharmacological assay of the different treatment groups in assessing their anti-seizure activities. Four treatments groups were utilized in the study. T1 was treated with Plain Normal Saline Solution which served as the negative control, T2 was treated with the standard drug Phenytoin while T3 and T4 were treated with two doses of Pomelo Leaf Extract namely 150 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg, respectively. Tramadol was used as a seizure-inducer to the test animals. In testing the anti-seizure activity of the plant, the number of dying animals, onset time when seizure occurs and the range of mV epileptiform discharges were used as parameters in the study. Kruskall-Wallis’ Test of the H-Test was used in the interpretation and analysis of data obtained in the study. Data revealed no significant difference on the anti seizure property between the Pomelo Leaf Extract and Phenytoin. However, when compared to those treated with Plain Normal Saline Solution, significant differences were observed. This means that Pomelo leaf extract and the standard drug Phenytoin are considered as more effective in managing seizures in Tramadol-inducedseizure on swiss mice than the PNSS-treated group. As regards to the diferent parameters used, Phenytoin has the shortest time of onset of seizure, lowest range of epileltiform discharge and no dead test animals were observed. The same results exhibited in the investigated Pomelo Leaf Extract. Therefore this study proved that Pomelo is effective in managing seizure.
|
