Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, City of Batac 2906, Ilocos Norte. March 2010. MOSQUITO REPELLANT ACTION OF TALISAY (TERMINALLA CATAPPA) LEAF EXTRACT Adviser: Kristian Gay Y. Dutdut
The Philippines is endowed with the abundance of natural resources, which includes the vast species of plants thriving in the country. People always find natural way to achieve a healthy body that is why many researches are conducted to uncover the mysteries and hidden uses of these natural plants. One known plant in the locality is the Cogon, which is familiarly used as a material in making native houses. This grass has been used widely around the globe as a diuretic, antibacterial and treatment for nose bleeds and hematemesis. This study explored the potential of the alkaloid obtained from Cogon (Imperata cylindrical Linnae) leaf extract as hemostatic agent. The dose which is effective in promoting hemostasis was compared was compared with the standard drug. The parameters used in establishing the hemostatic property of Cogon were bleeding time, clotting time and prothrombin time. The experimental research design was employed to gather supporting data that can prove the hemostatic property of the Cogon. The dose of 0.5 g/kg alkaloid and 1.0 g/kg alkaloid were found out to be effective as hemostatic agents and exhibit the same hemostatic property, since they have no significant difference in their ability to reduce BT, CT and PT of blood. In addition, the effective dose of the alkaloid extract was observed to be as effective as the standard drug. Tranexamic acid (Hemostan), as demonstrated by their comparable ability in reducing the BT, CT and PT of blood, hence they exhibit the same hemostatic property.

|
