ABSTRACT
AGUILAR, MCB., BUGAOISAN, PB., PUNGTILAN, QLG and TPLENTINO, KD, Undergraduate Thesis. Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, 2906 City of Batac, March 2014. Blood Glucose Lowering Activity of Petsay (Brassica Campestris) Leaf Extract on Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Albino Rats
Adviser: Franklin V. Ibana
This study aimed to determine the blood glucose lowering activity of Petsay (Brassica Campestris) Leaf Extract in alloxan-induced diabetic albino rats.
The fresh Petsay leaved were macerated in 95% ethanol for 72 hours. The plant extract was subjected to rotary evaporation. A portion of the leaf extract was collected and subjected to phytochemical screening. The phytochemical screening involced the Dragendorff’s Test, Mayer’s Test, Libermann-Burchard Test, Gelatin Test, Ferric Chloride Test, Bate-Smith and Metcalf, Fehlings Test, Stain Test, Xantoproteic test and Million’s Test. The result of these procedure indicated the presence of alkaloids, steroids, flavonoids, tannins and polyphenolic compounds, flavonoids, carbohydrates, volatile oilsand proteins in Petsay (Brassica Campestris) Leaf Extract. In the pharmacological assay, fifteen healthy albino rats weighing 80-140g were administered with alloxan monohydrate solution to induced hyperglycemia for 3 days. Group I served as the normal group, group II served as the diabetic control, Glibenclamide 5mg/kg was received by Group III, ethanolic extract of Petsay (200 mg/kg) leaf was received by Group IV, ethanolic extract of Petsay (400 mg/kg) was received by group initial fasting blood glucose level using was monitored using glucometer (Freestyle).
Based on the results, the administration of each treatment showed that there was a significant difference between the efficacy of Petsay leaf extract 200mg/kg and Petsay leaf extract 400mg/kg compared to Glibenclamide 5mg/kg. Petsay leaf extract. Petsay leaf extract showed its efficacy in lowering blood glucose after 3 hours but it is not effective as the positive control Glibenclamide.
|
