Expansion of summary note ABAD AFE., BOLO CMB., YANIT IA. Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, 2906 City of Batac, March 2014. Pharmacological Evaluation Of The Anti-Fungal Anthelmintic And Antioxidant Potential Of San Fransisco (Codiaeum Variegatum) Leaf Extract
Adviser: Dr. Aileen O. Camangeg
San Francisco (Codiaeum Variegatum) Leaf Extract (SFLE) was evaluated for its anti-fungal, anthelmintic and antioxidant potentials. The extracts were subjected to confirmatory test to affirm the presence of the bioactive constituents wherein tannins, flavonoids and saponins were confirmed to be present but were found to be negative from alkaloids.
The agar-well diffusion method revealed that the two (2) fungal test organisms, Candida albicans and Trichophyton mentagrophytes are resistant to the four (4) concentrations (25%, 50%, 75% and 100%) of SFLE.
SFLE exhibited anthelmintic potential against the earthworm with paralysis ranging from loss of motility to loss of response to external stimuli, up to death. The comparative average paralysis and death time readings of the SFLE and the positive control, Albendazole are not statistically significant as evaluated by the t-test for equality of means. The DPPH assay disclosed a quantitatively significant between the free-scavenging potential in terms of EC50 of the SFLE and Ascorbic acid. However, it was also revealed that the comparative mean ansorbance readings of the extract and blank are statistically significant which implies that the ethno-botanical claim of SFLE as antioxidant is thus sustained. The total phenolic content assay using the Folin-Ciocalteau method reveals that San Francisco contains 63.203 ug/mg of total polyphenols.
