Summary, etc. ABSTRACT
Expansion of summary note DOMINGO AJA, BELTRAN MLA, CORPUZ CJA, REINTAR MLP. Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, March 2014. Antimicrobial property of Smallanthus Sonchifolius (Yacon) Root Extract
Adviser: Anabelle L. Bernardo
In spite of recent advances in health care in the country, microbial infections remain to be one of the reasons why there is an increasing size of population at risk. Philippines, our country, has a tropical marine climate dividend into a rainy and dry season. Having an average temperature of 27-33°C and a relative humidity of 77-83°C makes the weather almost always hot and humid. These environmental factors and their interaction with age, occupation, generic susceptibilities and immune responsiveness contribute to the high prevalence of microbial infections among Filipinos. According to David W. Warnock, 2007, Candida species remain the fourth most important cause of dermal infections. These studies lead to the conception of this study, The antimicrobial property of Smallanthus Sonchifolius (Yacon) Root Extract. An experimental research design was used. Student’s T-test was used to describe the difference among the treatments (Samalallanthus sonchifolius root extract, Neomycin, Tioconazole).
No significant difference as obtained between the effects of Yacon root extract and Neomycin against Staphylococcus aureus and Tioconazole against Candida albicans and Tioconazole against Candida albicans. No evident effect of the root extract was seen aganinst strains from Streptococcus pyogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Fusarium oxysporum.
The study shows that the pure extract S. sonchifolius is capable of inhibiting fungal growth in the skin while it has minimal effects on bacteria-cauisng dermal infections.
