Summary, etc. ABSTRACT
Expansion of summary note BALADAD, M.O., LABAO, M.P., MENDOZA, AJ.C., MUDDALAN, A.P. March 2014. Brine Shrimp Toxicity Assay, Antioxidant and Antibacterial Property of Lubeg (Syzgiumcurani) leaf extract. Undergraduate Thesis. Department of Pharmacy. College of Health Sciences. Mariano Marcos State University 2906 Batac, Ilocos Norte
Adviser: Mr. Rhian Jay Ramil
The study used experimental research to investigate the antioxidant, antibacterial property and lethality bioassay of Lubeg (Syzgiumcurani) leaf extract.
To determine the antioxidant potential of lubeg leaf extract, the 2,2-diphenyl-1-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), Total Flavonoid and Total Phenolic Content were utilized. The DPPH assay resulted to quantitatively no significant difference which implies that Lubeg (Syzgiumcurani) leaf extract has great free radical inhibiting effect that is comparatively near to ascorbic acid. The Total Phenolic Content that contains 133.40 mcg of total polyphenols as GAE per milligram extract and Total Flavonoid Content that contains less tan 5.0 ug of total flavonoid as quercetin equivalent per milligram extract.
The extracts obtained from Lubeg plant were subjected to phytochemical screening and was identified that flavonoids saponins and polyphenols were the significant difference of sample and control. the results revealed that among the three concentrations, 1000ug/ml has the highest zone of inhibition compared to 250ug/ml, 500ug/ml and negative control against S.aureus, S. pyogenes, E. coliand P. aeruginosa.
Lethality bioassay was conducted with the result that the lowest mortality rate of the median lethal concentration was 0% with a probit of 0 and the highest mortality rate obtained was 14% with a probit of 3.92. the median lethal concentration was 2,146.01 ug/ml which meets the LC50 range of amounts greater than 1000ug/ml which implies the extract is non-toxic.
