Summary, etc. ABSTRACT
Expansion of summary note BAGA ECR, BAJO NRB, MATIAS RRG. Anti-diabetic activity of kamias (Averrhoa bilimbi Ox.) fruit extract in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Mariano Marcos State University. March 2014.
Adviser: Ms. Ma. Danica I. Ramil
The present study aimed to evaluate the anti-diabetic activity of kamias (Averrhoa bilimbi Ox.) fruit extract in alloxan-induced diabetic rats.
The pure extract was obtained by defatting the freeze-dried kamias (Averrhoa bilimbi) fruit with petroleum ether, extraction through maceration with 95% ethanol and rotary evaporation at 40°C. one-way analysis of variance and least significant difference test were employed in the statistical analysis of data.
The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of tannins and saponins in Kamias fruit extract.
In the Brine Shrimp Lethality Bioassay, the Kamias fruit extract is found to be practically non-toxic with an LC50 value of 123284.6739 mcg/ml.
In pharmacological testing, alloxan-induced diabetic rat-groups untreated and treated with Glibenclamide and Kamias fruit extract and non-diabetic rat –group were evaluated for 21 days. Blood glucose level, body weight, feed and liquid intake, urine output and urinary glucose level was use as parameters.
The results revealed that the anti-diabetic activity of Kamias fruit extract were comparable with Glibenclamide in terms of lowering blood glucose level, increasing body weight, decreasing feed and liquid intake, urinary glucose level (p<0.01) and urine output (p<0.05) after 21 days.
