Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health and Science, March 2013. HYPOCHOLESTEROLEMIC ACTIVITY OF DIPPIG (Musa Balbisiana) FLOWER EXTRACT ON CHOLESTEROL-INDUCED GUINEA PIGS
Adviser: Ma. Danica I. Ramil, Rph, MS
Co-adviser: Janelyn Viado Rojas, RPh, MST, MS

This is an experimental study on the activity of Dippig (Musa Balbisiana) Flower Extract (MBFE) as a hypocholesterolemic agent. It evaluates the combined effects of diet and treatment given simultaneously to induce hypocholesterolemic guinea pigs. The extract was obtained by maceration. Through phytochemical screening, alkaloids, flavonoids, fixed oils and tannins were found out as active constituents present in the Dippig (Musa Balbisiana) Flower Extract.
This study further compares the effects of Dippig (Musa Balbisiana) Flower Extract (test drug) to Simvastatin (Simvast 20mg) (positive control drug) and distilled water (negative control) on the body weight, serum total cholesterol, and triglyceride level of twenty (20) randomly selected guinea pigs. Twenty (20) randomly selected guinea pigs (Caviaporcellus) were randomly allocated to four (4) groups of five (5). These guinea pigs were given a normal diet of pellets during acclimation and treatment period. The guinea pigs were fasted for ten (10) hours the guinea pigs were fasted for ten (10) hours acclimation period. The following day, blood was extracted via ear venepuncture and body weight was measured. This first extraction determined the baseline cholesterol, triglyceride, and body weight measurement. On the following days, test animals were fed with fresh quail eggs to administer hypercgolesterolemia through oral administration for seven (7) days. After measuring the body weight, blood cholesterol , and triglyceride level as initial readings, the positive control (Simvastatin 600ug/kg), the plant extract (Musa balbisiana 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg), and the negative control (distilles water) were given orally for seven (7) days while continuously inducing 2 mL of Fresh quail eggs for hypercholesterolemic activity. The administered dose of the plant extract is dependent upon the weight of the guinea pigs that are applicable to the test procedure. after the treatments, a final reading was done to determine the changes in the body weight, cholesterol level, and triglyceride level of the guinea pigs. differences among the treatments were analyzed using Analysis of Variance and Duncan's multiple range tests. the results of the study showed that the MBFE 200mg/kg lowered the body weight, cholesterol and triglyceride but is not as effective as the MBFE 400mg/kg and the positive control (600mcg/kg simvastatin). MBFE 400mg/kg also lowered the body weight, serum cholesterol and triglyceride as effective as the positive control (600mcg/kg).
