Summary, etc. |
The study assessed the tree health in the urban forests at the municipalities of Badoc and Pinili, Ilocos Norte from March to May 2023. Specifically, it identified the health characteristics/status of different species trees of the vicinities of the various establishments, such as churches, parks, municipal halls, markets, schools, and main roads; determined the defects/diseases/ pests affecting the health of the trees; identify the most prevalent defects/disease/pest of the trees; and identify the site factors affecting the health of the trees. The study was undertaken through a field survey/documentation/assessment of the trees in the municipalities of Badoc and Pinili, Ilocos Norte focusing on their health status. In Badoc, the study site lies from 17º55’12.00” N latitude to 17º57’15.00” N latitude and from 120º28’31.50” E longitude to 120º31’31.40” E longitude. Meanwhile, in Pinili, the study areas lies from 17º57’36.80” N latitude to 17º57’17.20" N latitude and from 120º31’39.00” E longitude to 120º31’12.50” E longtitude. Atotal of 25 species belonging to 16 families were identified in Badoc, while, a total of 16 species belonging to 9 families were noted in Pinili. The highest number xvi of species was obtained from family Fabaceae with five species in Badoc and six species in Pinili. Among the problems/defects noted, trunk decay is the most prevalent, infecting 153 individual trees in Badoc and 175 in Pinili. Information gathered from the MPDO of the municipalities of Badoc and Pinili, revealed that pruning of urban trees is done as the need arises, to lessen the branches from falling, to prevent overgrown branches from damaging the roof of the buildings, for the trees to become aesthetically appealing and to mend/fix those trees affected by Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) projects. Geo-tagging of trees and their health conditions (dead, diseased/defective/infested and healthy) in the study area was done using a mobile phone with GPS status application, while their location maps were prepared and exported in the QGIS software to generate base maps. Based on the results of the study, immediate treatment of defective trees should be done and trees which posed danger to the community should be eliminated immediately. Moreover, proper and intensive cultural management practices should be done to maintain and sustain the benefits that they provide. Additionaly, there should be more intensive social studies regarding cultural management practices applied on the tree species in the municipalities of Badoc and Pinili. |
