Summary, etc. Roads are vital for economic and social progress, connecting communities and enabling the flow of goods and people. However, Batac-Banna Road in Batac City, Ilocos Norte, tells a different story. This road, stretching from KO 477+850 to KO 479, faces significant challenges with cracks and deteriorating pavement. Deep longitudinal and transverse cracks threaten safety and convenience. Our study investigates how soil properties and concrete strength contribute to these issues through field observations and laboratory tests. Walking along Batac-Banna Road, we saw firsthand the impact of these cracks—some small and innocuous, others wide and disruptive. Measurements revealed many sections fell short of the required concrete strength of 37.9901 MPa, with stations like 477+967.156 and 478+078.411 showing compressive strengths as low as 21.9943 MPa. Soil samples showed excessive plasticity, indicating a tendency to expand and contract, while bearing capacity tests revealed unstable ground. Surprisingly, statistical analyses showed a faint relationship between concrete strength and crack severity (p-value = 0.7316), and negligible correlations between soil properties and crack severity (p-value = 1.0). This suggests that pavement strength alone cannot fully explain crack formation. To restore Batac-Banna Road, we must address soil dynamics and enhance infrastructure durability, ensuring safe travels and fostering connectivity and prosperity.
