JR., SAGUCIO, JENSSEN MAE B. 2011. Investigation of the Antimicrobial Property of Kauayan (Bambusa Spinosa Roxb.) Vinegar Undergraduate Thesis. Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, City of Batac 2906, Ilocos Norte, Adviser: Aileen O. Camangeg; Co-adviser: Janelyn Viado-Rojas This study was conducted to investigate theAntimicrobial Property of Kauayan (Bambusa Spinosa Roxb.) Vinegar against the growth of pathogenic microorganisms. Four varied concentrations (25%, 50%, 75% and 100%) of Kauayan Vinegar, positive control (Bactroban Ointment and Tinactin Solution) and negative control (Distilles water) were used in the study and their effects were analysed and compared. The six treatments were administered in each disc containing strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Candida albicans. The effectively of the six treatments was monitored after 18-24 hours of incubation at 37 °c for bacteria and after 3-5 days of incubation at room temperature for fungi. The data gathered were statistically analysed using one-way ANOVA. Baed on the statistical analysis of the data gathered, four varied concentration (25%, 50%, 75% and 100%) of Kauayan Vinegar and the Bactroban Ointment are effective in the inhibition of bacterial growth, specifically Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. However, the 75% concentration of Kauayan (Bambusa Spinosa Roxb.) Vinegar exerted the higher antimicrobial activity. Distilled water showed no antibacterial activity. The results showed that the four varied concentartions of Kauayan (Bambusa Spinosa Roxb.) Vinegar and the positive control for fungi (Tinactin solution) were effective Antimicrobial agents to Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Candida albicans. The results revealed that as the concentration increases, the antifungal activity increases. Distilled water showed no antifungal activity. The 100% concentration of Kauayan (Bambusa Spinosa Roxb.) Vinegar and the positive controls showed no significant differences in their inhibitory activity, but with significant difference to the inhibitory activity of 25% concentrations and the negative control. The results indicated thet Kauayan (Bambusa Spinosa Roxb.) Vinegar is an effective antimicrobial agent.
