The Effectiveness of Tannin Obtained from Water lily (Castalia pubescens Blume) Adviser: Rhian Jaymar D. Ramil Tannins are known to have a therapeutic capability as a laxative. It has been useful both in industry and medicine that extractions from various sources have been extensively known. However, some plant sources known to contain tannins are not yet jbeing used. Therefore, a study was made on water lily plant. The study focused on the extraction of tannins from the roots of Water Llily as well as a confirmatory test on the presence of tannins on the extract. It also includes the seperation of tannins from its other constituents using the isolation process, follwed by the determination of the percent yield of tannins from the root extract. The yielded tannin was then utilized in the formulation of solution and tested its potency as a laxative. Based on the results tannins are present in the extract from the roots of Water Lily and that the percentage yield is only 6.14%. The dosage form was tested for its stability and its laxative effect on Swiss Mice, where tannins had been proven for its effectivity as laxative. Further studies on Water Lily (Castalia pubescens) root extract is recommended, other dosage form be formulated, and also extensive studies on its affectivity as a laxative be made.
