ANTI-ANGIOGENIC PROPERTY OF BIXIN ISOLATED FROM ACHUETE (BIXA ORELLANA LINN.) SEED EXTRACT AGAINST CARBON TETRACHLORIDE INDUCED: LIVER TOXICITY Adviser: Rhian Jaymar D. Ramil In the Philippines, cancer ranks third in the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. More researches in discovering anticancer agents which are abundant in nature and can be obtained and utilized for a very minimal cost are encouraged. This study deals with the anti-angiogenic effects of bixin the seed extract was initiates in order to find an alternative for the high-priced anti-cancer drugs and medications available today. Bixin was obtained by isolation; high glucose concentration was prepared at a concentration of 25mM; and distilled. Albino rats were divided into sets, with carbon tetrachloride and normal condition. Carbon Tetrachloride instilled to induce enlargement of endothelial cell linings. Each set received treatments of bixin, high glucose concentration and distilled water every day for fifteen days. Sections were stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin stain for histopathology. Data was subjected to ANOVA and T-tests for analysis. Instillation with Carbon Tetrachloride successfully induced enlargement of endothelial cell linings. Bixin present in the Achuete (Bixa orellana) seeds was effective in preventing the enlargement of the endothelial cell linings as it surpassed the efficacy of high glucose concentration inhibiting the proliferation of liver cells. Statistical analysis revealed that there is a significant difference on the anti-agiogenic activity between high glucose concentration and bixin. It was observed that bixin has no significant effect on the normal cells of the rats.
