The Effectiveness of flood control structures along Quiaoit river, Paoay, Ilocos Norte / Monica Bianca A. Agonoy, Gerald Niño E. Alcaraz, Kyla Crystelle M. Dumaoal, Angela Kyle N. Pacolor

By: Agonoy, Monica Bianca A...et.alMaterial type: TextTextPublication details: City of Batac : MMSU, 2024Description: xvii, 86 leaves : 29 cmSummary: The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of the existing flood control structures along Quiaoit River in Paoay, Ilocos Norte by simulating hydrologic and hydraulic models reflecting two flooding scenarios: with and without flood control structures. The required datasets such as: LiDAR DEM/DTM, Land Cover data, and RIDF Curve were utilized to simulate a Discharge Hydrograph based on the HEC-HMS Model which was vital in simulating hydraulic models with parameters like flood depth, flood arrival, time, velocity, extent, duration, and recession based on the HECRAS Model. The hydraulic simulation without flood control structures shows greater flooded areas compared to when flood control structures were present as the return period progresses. The flood control structures reduce an approximate area of 5.0888 km2 , 5.1471 km2 , 4.0297 km2 , 3.6232 km2 , and 1.5997 km2 for the 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100- year return periods. This pattern signifies the increasing effectiveness of the flood control structures as the severity of flood events escalates. The student’s t-test results also determine that there are significant differences in areas of flooding between the models with and without flood control structures in terms of the three hazard levels: low, medium, and high. Meanwhile, it was also determined that there are significant differences in maximum depth and average duration between the models with and without flood control structures while there is no significant difference in maximum velocity between the models with and without flood control structures.
