ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF ATSUETE (Bixa Orellana) LEAF EXTRACT AGAINST Streptococcus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa
THESIS ADVISER: MRS. MAGDALENA B. LAGUA
This research was conducted to determine the effectiveness of Atsuete (Bixa Orellana) as an antibacterial agent mainly against Streptococcus pyogene and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Reflux method was used for the extraction of the leaves. Preliminary screening indicates the presence of the active constituents namely tannins, saponins, and resins was also present in the leaves. The filter disc method was used for the measurement of zone of inhibition. The 75% concentration was the most effective against Streptococcus pyogenes and the Pseudomonas aeruginosa was greately inhibited by the 100% concentration. All the different concentrations used in this study showed antibacterial activity. The study revealed that 25% was the minimum concentration that inhibit the growth of Streptococcus pyogene and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
