The study was conducted to assess the production practices of small-hold goat
enterprise. Specifically, it aimed to determine the goat raiser-respondents' socio-
demographic profile (age, sex, educational attainment, family size, civil status,
organizational affiliation, source of information, and trainings or seminar attended),
economic/farm profile, and knowledge level on the production practices; the
relationship between the goat raisers' socio-demographic profile, economic/farm
profile, knowledge level; and their production practices, and the problems
encountered in raising goat.
The respondents of the study were goat raisers from the selected barangays of
the City of Batac, Ilocos Norte. The data were gathered through an interview schedule
and analyzed using frequency counts, means, percentages and Pearson Product
Moment correlation analysis.
The goat raiser-respondents were mostly middle-aged, predominantly females,
and with a medium family size. Majority of them were high school graduates and
married with medium family size. Majority of the goat raiser-respondents have a high knowledge level on goat raising. These raisers had been engaged with goat raising for long period of time.
Under breeding practices, majority of goats raised were Philippine native
goats. Most of the goat raiser-respondents employed pure breeding as breeding
system. All the goat raiser-respondents used natural mating as breeding method. The
body conformation of animal was the basis in selecting most of the bucks and does.
Also, majority of the stocks were purchased from their neighbors. The kidding
interval that was mostly employed by the goat raiser-respondents was 8-10 months.
For the feeding practices, most of the goat raiser-respondents tether their goats
wherein weeds were utilized as main feed resources. While under the health practices,
majority of the goat raiser-respondents employed deworming. The common diseases
of the goats that were observed by the goat raiser-respondents include bacterial
pneumonia and bloating. Moreover, under herd practices, goat raiser-respondents did
not employ dehorning, castration and weaning. Analysis of the data gathered revealed that the area planted with forages is negatively correlated with breeding and feeding management practices. In addition, the purpose of raising goat was significantly related to the health management practices.
The main problem encountered by the goat raiser-respondents is attack of
diseases like bacterial pneumonia and bloating.
