Marketing Practices of Backyard Goat Raisers in Banna, Ilocos Norte. Undergraduate Thesis. College of Agriculture, Food and Sustainable Development. Mariano Marcos State University, City of Batac 2906 Ilocos Norte. 50pp. Adviser: Mrs. Ethel Reynda M. Calivoso The study was conducted to provide general outlook on the marketing of goat in Banna, Ilocos Norte. Specifically, it aimed to determine the backyard goat raisers' socio-demographic profile, farm-economic profile, marketing practices such as pre- sale and sale practices, and problems and issues encountered in marketing goat. Thirty one backyard goat raisers in Banna, Ilocos Norte were interviewed. The data were gathered through an interview schedule and were analyzed using descriptive statistics like frequency counts, means and percentages. The goat raisers were mostly middle-aged, predominantly female, married and finished high school. The goat raisers belonged to a medium size family ranging from 1 to 5 number of family members. Majority of the goat raisers were not members of any organization. All of the goat raisers relied on their own experience in raising goat and had not attended any training or seminars in any related industries. All of the goat raisers do not plan any forage for their goats. The goat raisers practiced continuous grazing in which the animals are allowed to graze on the area as long as grasses and trees could sustain the animals. The primary source of income of the goat raisers were mostly through farming. In terms of approximate annual income, almost all the goat raisers had an income of Php 70,000 below. Majority of the goat raisers raised native goats. Goat raisers claimed that does are the most saleable followed by buck. In terms of the mode of acquisition, all the goat raisers claimed that they are securing their own replacement stocks. The following are the average prices of goat based on type; doe - Php 2,516, buck - Php 2,356, female kid - Php 1,878, and male kid - Php 1,780. Does and bucks are the most expensive types of goat because they are used for breeding. All of the goat raisers are selling goats per head using eye-ball estimation method. Goat raisers claimed that the selling of goat in per kilogram basis is not being practiced in Banna, Ilocos Norte. Also, producers are not dealing with the same buyers and they sold their goat on cash basis because they find it difficult to collect credit payments. Both the buyers and sellers negotiate regarding the price of the goat. This means that they have bargaining power in pricing goat unlike in other types of commodities. The buyers are the ones picking up the goat at the production areas. Therefore, the producers do not incur expenses on disposal. Farm area and home/house is the place of transaction because buyers visited frequently the area to purchase goats. Goat raisers sold their goat during graduation, Christmas, New Year, birthdays, other special occasions and school openings. The low farm herd productivity is the main problem of the raisers. They do not have enough stock of goat for year-round supply for marketing and breeding. Also, the distance from the market is a problem especially for backyard goat raisers who want to sell their goat in the market when no buyers come to the area. Although the producers claimed that they have bargaining power in setting the price for their produce, there are still times when they cannot get the price that they want because of the seasonality of the price. This is experienced when there is low demand for goat. Also, there are times when no buyer comes to their area because of the remote production site ER -
