THE LAXATIVE ACTIVITY OF THE CRUDE EXTRACT FROM THE LEAVES AND STALKS OF CARABAO GRASS ( Paspalum conjugatum). 65 pp. Adviser : Mrs. Aileen O. Camangeg This study investigated the laxative activity of the crude from the leaves and stalks of carabao grass (Paspalum conjugatum). The study made use of an experimental method of research using descriptive and qualitative analysis to characterize the chemicals present in the 80% alcoholic crude extract from the leaves and stalks of carabao grass. To assign the swiss mice into five treatment groups, the Complete Randomized Design (CRD) was used. The swiss mice were treated by an oral administration with an interval of 36 hours every trial. The study had five treatments, T1 - Carabao Grass Crude extract with a dose of 0.05 mL dose, T2 - Carabao Grass Crude Extract with a dose of 0.10 mL dose, T3 - Carabao Grass Crude Extract with a dose of 0.15 mL dose, T4 - Positive Control (C-Lium Fibre) , a commercially prepared bulk-forming laxative, and T5 - Negative Control (Distilled Water). There were three replications for each treatment. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to determine if there is a significant difference between the carabao grass crude extract, the positive control C-Lium Fibre as well as the negative control (distilled water) and to know which among the three doses of the crude carabao grass extract is the most effective. The study came out with the following findings : The crude extract from the leaves and stalks of carabao grass (Paspalum conjugatum) was found to be positive for the presence of alkaloid, carbohydrate, protein, saponin and tannin that indicates that the plant contains some medicinally active constituents although found negative in anthraquinone and flavonoid. The leaves and stalks extracts of the carabao grass (Paspalum conjugatum) is very soluble in distilled water and 80% Ethanol, slightly soluble in Diethyl Ether and freely soluble in Chloroform. The carabao crude extract posses laxative activity in varying doses. the greater the dose, the greater laxative activity it has. It is comparable to the positive control since there is no significant difference between the two. The crude extract from the leaves and stalks of carabao grass (Paspalum conjugatum) is not comparable to the negative control. Based on the findings, the crude extract from the leaves and stalks of carabao grass (Paspalum conjugatum) serves as a good laxative promoting better digestation and better waste disposal. Good waste disposal is necessary to maintain healthy body. ER -
