A PHARMACOLOGIC INVESTIGATION ON TALAHIB (Saccharum spontaneum) ROOT EXTRACT AS DIURETIC 54 pp Thesis Adviser: Ms. Janelyn P. Viado A pharmacologic investigation was undertaken to determine the diuretic effect of Talahib (Saccharum spontaneum) root extract on guinea pigs and to determine the phytochemicals present in the root extract. Phytochemical screening using Liebermann-Buchard Test conferred the presence of saponins and was confirmed through froth, capillary and haemolytic test. Determination of effective dose that will manifest a diuretic effect of the plant extract was done through the administration of different sizes of dose (0.5 mL, 1.0mL, 1.5mL). furosemide was used as the positive control and distilled water for the negative control. The following parameters were measured from the experimental animals: electrolyte excretion; sodium (Na+), potassium (K+) and the volume of urine. The largest amount of sodium was excreted by the Talahib root extract; however, Furosemide eliminates the largest amount of potassium. Statistically, Talahib root extract does not differ significantly in terms of sodium and urine excretion compared to the standard drug. However, in terms of potassium excretion it is not comparable to the standard drug because of its minimal effect as to the elimination of the said electrolyte ER -
