ABSTRACT GARCIA, DAEZHEL JOYCE and RAMOS, KANISHA LANE B. 2020, Design, Modification and Evaluation of Village Type Corn Sheller Machine. Undergraduate Thesis. Mariano Marcos State University, City of Batac, Ilocos Norte, 64 pp Adviser: Engr. Carlito V. Santiago The processing of agricultural product into quality forms not only prolongs the useful life of these products but also increases the net profit farmers make from such products. Corn (Zea maize L.), next to wheat and rice, is the most important cereal grain in the world, providing nutrients for humans and animals and serving as a basic raw material for the production of starch, oil and protein. There is an undeniably change in the shelling technique of maize through the years from manual to mechanical. However, many farmers grow maize but could not afford the cost of acquiring some of the imported threshing machines because of their cost. Such people resort to manual means of threshing which results into low efficiency, high level of wastage and exerting of much labour. This study then aimed to design a com sheller that is farmer friendly, specifically aimed to shell the optimum capacity of corn shellers and to evaluate its performance by taking its shelling capacity, shelling recovery, shelling efficiency, percentage of mechanically damaged kernels and losses. The design, testing and evaluation of the machine were based on the specifications and methods given by the Philippine Agricultural Engineering Standards. The designed and evaluated village type com sheller machine has het, length and width of 40 cm, 56 cm, and 72 em, respectively. It was evaluated using 1.5 hp electric motor Based on the results gathered, the designed machine surpassed the specifications given by PAES in terms of its shelling recovery and shelling efficiency. It could shall approximately 105.35 kg/hr. It has a shelling efficiency of 99 A8%, indicating a good performance of the machine.
