HYPOGLYCEMIC ACTIVITY OF CAIMITO (Chrysophyllum cainito) LEAF EXTRACT ADVISER: Mrs. Gemma C. Vinluan 44 pp This study on Hypoglycemic Activity of Caimito (Chrysophyllum Cainito) Leaf Extract was conducted from September to October, 2004 to determine its effectiveness in lowering the blood glucose level of hyperglycemic-induced twelve male guinea pigs. The study made use of an experimental design quantitative analysis to establish the cause and effect relationship between Caimito leaf extract and induced blood sugar level of 12 male guinea pigs. The caimito leaf was obtained through maceration and steam evaporation process. The leaf extract was prepared into three different concentration s (20%, 40%, 60%). A complete Randomized design (CRD) was used to assign the guinea pigs into 4 treatment groups. A complete crossover design was employed and planned the clinical trial such that the treatment groups did not receive the same treatment on the same day. The four groups were subjected to the following treatments: T1 – negative control (distilled water, T2-20% CLE, T3- 40% CLE and T4- 60% CLE. The collected data were analysed using ANOVA and DMRT. Results of the study revealed that 60% CLE was observed to be the most effective in lowering the blood glucose level of hyperglycemic-induced 12 male guinea pigs. This treatment showed significant difference over that of 20% and 40% CLE including the negative control (distilled water). ER -
