The Effectiveness and Efficiency of Botika ng Barangay on Health Care Deliver Adviser: Imelda Corpuz The primary aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness and efficacy of Botika ng Barangay in Ilocos Norte in the delivery of health care services. Specifically, the study attempted to determine the following: 1) Profile of the Botika ng Barangay in Ilocos Norte; 2) profile of the consumers in terms of their gender, age, family income, religion, highest educational attainment and occupation; 3) the level of effectiveness of the BnB program as perceived by the consumer and the BnB implementors; 4) The level of efficiency of the BnB program in disseminating drug information to the public; and 5) the level of seriousness of the encountered by the BnB. The respondents of the study include health care practitioners and consumers with a total of 338. Data were gathered using a survey questionnaire in the 12 towns of Ilocos Norte having BnB. Gathered data were interpreted and analysed using descriptive statistics like frequency expressed in percentage and weightened means. The study was conducted during the second semester of SY 2009-2010. Findings of the study showed that majority of the BnB are operated/managed by the barangay (12 OR 43.00%), servicing remote areas (13 or 46.00%), having a capitalization of Php 20,000.00 and below (27 or 96.00%) scheduled visit of a pharmacist (24 or 86.00%), established through a barangay resolution (20 or 72.00%), having one to two trained BnB aides (26 or 92.00%), with an area of less than ¼ hectare (27 or 96.00%), and with DOH assistance on monitoring (21 or 75.00%). Moreover, the study found out that of the responsibilities of the management of the BnB, keeping drug/medication services was highly considered (27 or 96.00%). Likewise, the study found out that majority of the respondent consumers are females, aged 46 and above, having a family income below Php 6,000.00, belong to the Roman Catholic religion, high school graduate and are unemployed or self employed. Generally, the BnB program in Ilocos Norte was found to be effective in providing training to the BnB aides, in providing services in complying with the provisions in the BnB Manual, in the establishment and operation of herbal garden and the provision for counselling. Result of the study further showed that the efficiency of the BnB program in disseminating drug information to the public was found to be effective as indicated by the total computed weighted mean of 2.00. however, it is good to note that the BnB program is very efficient in disseminating dosage of taking drugs or medications as revealed by the computed weighted mean of 2.48. Lastly, findings of this study revealed that serious problems encountered by the respondent consumer like “lack of patient counselling’, on “BnB personnel are knowledgeable on drug” and the less problems are “BnB personnel are not approachable” and “ drugs are not still affordable”. The most revealing problem that this study found out which is very serious is that pharmacists are not regularly coming to the BnB thus not regularly attending to the needs of the respondents as indicated by the computed weighted mean of 2.48.
