Diabetes mellitus is ranked 8th among the leading causes of mortality in the Philippines. Many plant treatments for diabetes have been recorded, but only a small number of these have received assessment for their efficacy. This study used a randomized pre test – post tets experimental research design to determine the hypoglycemic activity of the crude extract of Tampai leaves (CETL) on Alloxan induced hyperglycemia in Albino rats. The powdered plant material was macerated for 48 hours and the extract was obtained by rotary evaporation. Phytochemical screening was conducted to determined the constituents present in CETL. Fifteen Albino rats were utilized and divided into five groups. Group I served as the Normal Control while the other groups were injected with Alloxan to become hyperglycemic and as follows: Group II (Hyperglycemic Control given with PNSS 20mL/Kg), Group III (Positive Control treated with Glibenclamide 6.75 mg/Kg), Group IV (CETL 500 mg/kg) and Group V (CETL 500 mg/kg). it was found out that CETL contains hydrolysable tannins, saponins, fixed oils, proteins and anthraquinones. Pharmacological assay revealed that CETL 250 mg/kg and CETL 500 mg/kg are comparable with Glibenclamide and are all effective as hypoglycemic agents by means of lowering FBS, increasing weight and normalizing serum lipid levels.
