The researchers tested the potential of Lali-lali (Gelidiella Acerosa) as a hepatoprotective agent against paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity using the recommendation of Devi., et al. (2008). According to Devi., et al. (2008, G. acerosa has high antioxidant activity which might be helpful in preventing or slowing the progress of various oxidative stress related disorders. Confirmatory phytochemical screening using Elsie et al. (2011) study results as basis, showed positive result on saponins, alkaloids, tannins and flavonoids. The rats treated with 100mg of Lali-lali extract has comparable performance with that of 100 mg of Silymarin in terms of Feed and water intake after 24 hours of Paracetamol intoxication; body weight gain/loss; blood SGOT enzyme and liver weight. Histopathological screening revealed that Lali-lali at 200 mg dose has comparable morphological feature as compared to the normal control which has been given with Paracetamol at the tenth-day of experimentation.

The lali-lali plants should be extracted with other solvents to come up with better extraction of compounds. Isolation of the compounds of them for better understanding on what compound is responsible for its hepatoprotective activity is highly recommended. Study on the productive role of Lali-lai extract on the other organs is recommended to determine the degree of its action. Other pharmacologic activity of the plant extract should be done to widen its use. Incorporation of Lali-lali plant to the diet of locals is highly recommended because of its antioxidant and hepatoprotective property.
