_bBALBAS, DIANNECA L., CASTILLO, LANI GRACE D., DELA CRUZ, CIELA MARIE., OAO, MARIBEL N. . Undergraduate Thesis. Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, City of Batac. September 2008. HEPAPROTECTIVE POTENTIAL OF ACHUETE (BIXA ORELLANA) LEAF EXTRACT ON CARBON TETRACHLORIDE (CC14)-INDUCED LIVER DAMAGE ON RATS Adviser: Ms. Kristian Gay Y. Dutdut Dried leaves of Achuete were extracted using 80% Ethanol and tested for hepaprotective potential of CCl4 –induced liver damage on rats. The parameters assessed were Serum Level of Glutamic Pyruvate Transaminase, Glutamic Oxaloacetate Transaminasse, Alkaline Phosphate, total protein, and triglycerides. Liver weight of the test animals were also determined as well as the change in the body weights as observed. It was observed from the morphological examination of the liver that animals treated with CCl4 resulted in liver enlargement. The group treated with ALE had livers which were similarly found in the normal rats and were healthy in appearance. The SGPT levels of the animals among the four treatment groups showed significant differences also a significant increase in SGOT level was seen in CCl4 – intoxicated control group. With regards to the triglycerides levels of the test animals, results also showed significant differences. Cholesterol level among the four treatment groups also showed significant differences. It was found out that ALE possessed hepaptoprotective activity in CCl4 – induced liver damaged rats with regards to SGPT and SGOT levels.
