_bABSTRACT ASUNCION, RODEL D., MARCOS, GLADYS S., RAMAJO, BEVERLY ALLEN E., RARANGOL LAURENCE R., Undergraduate thesis. Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, Batac City 2906 Ilocos Norte, October 2007. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE ALKALOID OBTAINED FROM THE LEAF EXTRACT OF BIRD’S NEST FERN (Asplenium Nidus) AS SEDATIVE HYPNOTIC 70 pp Thesis Adviser: Ms. Janelyn P. Viado The study cpnveyed the possibility of Bird’s nest fern plant (Asplenium Nidus) as sedative-hypnotic. The therapeutic activity of the alkaloid leaf extract was determined through intraperitoneal route of administration to the Swiss Mice and the onset and duration of action was observed. The effect of the extract on the normal sleep pattern of the test animals was checked after the treatment. The experimental research design was used to verify the sedative-hypnotic activity of the alkaloid obtained from the leaf extracts Bird’s nest fern plant (Asplenium Nidus) and to collect date required for the study. The alkaloid constituent present in the Bird’s nest fern plant (Asplenium Nidus) leaf extract was effective as sedative-hypnotic at 100% concentration. The 50% concentration only exhibited a sedative effect on the Swiss Mice. 100% concentration showed a similar therapeutic activity as that of the standard drug Diazepam shown by their onset and duration of action observed on the test animals. The normal sleep pattern after the treatment was altered, the frequency of sleep per day was decreased and the duration of sleep per day was prolonged.
