THE SKELETAL MUSCLE RELEXANT ACTIVITY OF THE ALKOID OBTAINED FROM BETEL (Piper Betle) LEAF EXTRACT 73 pp Thesis Adviser: Mr. Augustus Caesar Pati Thousands of plants are found in the Philippines, they are considered as one of the country’s prominent wealth. Local people and even health care practitioners have been widely using herbal medications because of its economic value and their belief in curing the natural way. One known plant with established therapeutic value is the Betel (Piper betle). The plant has been broadly used therapeutically and as a antiseptic breath freshner around the globe. This study investigated the potential of the alkaloid obtained from Betel (Piper betle) leaf extract as skeletal muscle relaxat. The concentration which was most effective to indeuce skeletal muscle relaxation comparable to the standard drug has also been identified. Also, the observation on the onset and duration of action on rabbits as test animals were verified. The experimental research design was employed to gather data for the study of the skeletal muscle relexant effect of Betel plant. The alkaloid present on the plant extract were found out to be most effective at 100% concentration which was manifested by shortest onset of action and longest duration of action compared to other alkaloid concentrations. Furthermore, it was observed that the alkaloid extract having 100% concentration is as effective as compared to the standard drug, Succinylcholine chloride (Quelicin), as exhibited by their comparable time in inducing skeletal muscle relaxation and the duration of time in which they kept the skeletal muscle relaxed.
