_bCAÑETE, JONALYN J., COLOMA, ROSELYN MAE S., NAGUM, ELEONOR D., NICOLAS, MA. CRISTINA. Undergraduate Thesis. Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, City of Batac. October 2008 EFFECTIVITY OF CELERY (APIUM GRAVEOLENS) STALK EXTRACT AS DIURETICS Adviser: Ms. Imelda B. Corpuz The pharmacologic investigation was done to determine the diuretic effect of Celery (Apium graveolens) stem extract on guinea pigs and to determine the constituents present in the stem extract through phytochemical analysis. Phytochemical screening using the Fehling’s test conferred presence of glycosides, alkaloids with used of Dragendorff’s and volatile oils using stain test, tannins using ferric chloride test, carbohydrates using Fehling’s and resins using 1% aqueous hydrochloric acid. Determination of effective dose that was manifested to the diuretic effect of the plant extract was done through the administration of different sizes of dose (0.1 ml, 0.5 ml, and 1.43 ml) for positive control, Furosemide was used and distilled water for negative. The parameters that were measured from the experimental animals are: electrolyte excretion; sodium (Na) and Potassium (K). Potassium is the largest amount that was excreted by the Celery stem extract: Furosemide eliminates the sodium content. Based on statistics, Celery stem extract, shows that there is no significant difference based on the potassium content and urine excretion composed to the standard drug because there is no significant difference based on the said electrolyte.
