_bARSAYO, MA. JANICE M., DOMINGO, MARICEL G., REYNO, REY CHRISTIAN . Undergraduate Thesis. Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, City of Batac. March 2010. EFFECTS OF RETAILING MEDICINES BY SARI-SARI OR VARIETY STORES TO THE PHARMACEUTICAL CARE IN ILOCOS NORTE. Adviser: Ma. Danica A. Ines Retailing medicines by sari-sari or variety stores in an immense problem largely unrecognized by the consumer world. The relentless problem of retailing drugs by sari-sari or variety stores is long unnoticed by the government resulting to a serious concern for pharmaceutical care and patient safety. The study focuses on the effects of retailing medicines by sari-sari or variety stores to pharmaceutical care in Ilocos Norte. Survey was conducted with the store owners and patients or consumers. Data’s reveal that patients or consumers who buy medicines in the sari-sari or variety stores were either aware or unaware if the medicine are correct or not. Store owners who sell medicines are not knowledgeable enough when it comes to the uses and frequency of use of a drug. Store owners do not have the sense of responsibility to the outcome intended to improve the patient’s quality of life which is the primary concern in pharmaceutical care. Further studies are recommended to include extensive research monitoring on the retailing of medicines of sari-sari or variety stores. It is generally recognized that the drugstore business is imbued with public interest. The health and safety of the people will put into jeopardy if store owners or sari-sari store will continue to sell drugs. Store owners or sellers should never be allowed to the job that pharmacists are licensed to do. Let alone, to dispensing a drug with regard to its classification as over the counter drug or prescription.
