_aABSTRACT _bMendoza., Jade P., Pasalo, Ma. Theresa J., Perlata, Sheryl C., Rigonan, Kathleen Joy C. Undergraduate Thesis. Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, City of Batac. October 2007. The Sedative Hypnotic Property of the Semi-Purified Alkaloidal Extract from the Leaves of Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia Crassipes) Adviser: Ms. Aileen O. Camangeg This study investigated the sedative-hypnotic activity of the semi-purified alkaloidal extract from the leaves of water hyacinth (Eichhornia Crassipes). The study made used of a nine (9) male Swiss mice and divided into three groups; positive control which was administered with Diazepam (Valium), a commercially prepared sedative-hypnotic agent; negative control which administered with 0.9% Sodium Chloride Solution that serves as the solvent; an the third group which was administered with the semi purified alkaloidal extract from the leaves of water hyacinth (Eichhornia Crassipes). The presence of alkaloids, saponins, carbohydrates, proteins and tannins in the crude extract from the leaves of water hyacinth (Eichhornia Crassipes) was determined the phytochemical screening. Semi-purified alkaloidal extract from the leaves of water hyacinth (Eichhornia Crassipes) was capable in producing a sedative hypnotic activity and it was comparable to the positive control, Diazepam (Valium). T-test was used in the interpretations and analysis of the result of the experiment and the gathered data to determine the differences between the three groups induced with the different drug namely; Diazepam (Valium), 0.9% Sodium Chloride Solution, and the semi-purified alkaloidal extract from the leaves of water hyacinth (Eichhornia Crassipes). This study clarified that the semi-purified alkaloidal extract from the leaves of water hyacinth (Eichhornia Crassipes) was able to produce sedation and hypnosis. |
