_bALAOG, FP., CAC, NBC., MANGLAL-LAN, GP. Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, 2906 City of Batac, March 2014. Hypocholesterolemic Activity of Kamagong (Diospyros Blancoi) Crude Extract in Cholesterol Fed Guinea Pigs (Cavia Porcellus) Adviser: Kristian Gay Y. Dutdut This study aimed to determine the efficacy of Kamagong (Diospyros Blancoi) Crude Extract in lowering blood cholesterol level (BCL) of guinea pigs. This is a pre-test post-test control group design study on the activity of Kamagong Crude Extract as hypocholesterolemic agent. In determining hypocholesterolemic activity of the extract, fresh kamagong leaves were extracted through maceration. Phytochemical screening showed positive results in the presence of alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, tannins and fixed oils. The Approximate Lethal Dose of the crude extract was determined by giving 300mg/kg crude extract as starting dose to the guinea pigs (5 male and 5 female) and increased by using logarithmic method at 0.6 intervals. As a result, crude extract has No Observed Effect Level (NOEL) which means that there were no lethal effects of observed in exposed test animal population. Its cholesterol lowering activity was tested on fifteen (15) guinea pigs that were randomly selected representing the five treatment groups: Negative Control, Positive Control, and the Test Drug Group was divided into three different doses of Kamagong Crude Extract: 0.25g/kg, 0.50g/kg and 1.0g/kg. five grams (5g) of fresh quail eggs and condensed milk was used to induce hypercholesterolemia to the test animals. One Way Analysis of Variance and Turkey Honest Significant Difference was used in determining the differences between treatment groups. Based on the results of the study, the Kamagong (Diospyros Blancoi) Crude Extract is as effective as the commercial drug, simvastatin. This means that the crude extract had the potential in lowering the BCL of the test animal.
