520 _aThe study investigates the effects of varying sodium hydroxide concentration, pulping time and temperature on the quality of paper produced derived from tobacco stalks. The research evaluated thirteen different combinations for 20%, 30% and 40% NaOH concentration, pulping time of 4 hours, 6 hours and 8 hours and pulping temperature of 110°C, 120°C and 130°C. It includes the determination of physical and mechanical properties of paper produced such as grammage, water absorptivity and tensile strength. Based from the grammage values obtained, application of the papers produced vary from painting paper to grey board. STDs were grouped based in the amount of NaOH used to obtain the pulp. At 20%, STD 3 (20:8:120) had the highest grammage value of 568.2993 g/m2 while STD 1 (20:4:120) had the least water absorptivity of 284.7569, highest tensile strength of 4731.9899 N/m2 and displayed as the most economical with the shortest pulping time of four hours. At 30% concentration, STD 11 (30:4:130) produced the highest grammage value of 661.9864 g/m2 and STD 13 produced the least water absorptivity value. STD 10 obtained the highest tensile strength of 9877.0305 N/m2. However, STD 9 was identified as the most cost-effective option compared to STDs 10, 11, 12, and 13. At 40% NaOH concentration, STD 6 displayed the highest grammage value of 608.8163 g/m2 while STD 8 with combinations of 40%, 6 hours and 120°C exhibited the highest tensile strength. For the water absorptivity, STD 2 had a value of 257.9903 and emerged as the best treatment among the four standards.
