The reserachers tested the potential property of of screw pine (Pandanus adoratissimus) as a hepatoprotective agent against paracetamol induced hepatotoxicity using pre-test-posttest research design. Confirmatory phytochemical screening using the method of Kusuma et. al. (2012), showed that the leaf extract contains flavonoids, saponin and tannins which maybe responsible for its hepatoprotective activity. Oral acute toxicity test was performed using the Organisation for Economic Coopertaion and Development (OECD) guideline. Observation was done for a total of 14 days were none of the dosed test animals died which means that the leaf extract is safe and nontoxic.
The rats treated with 1000 mg of Screw Pine leaf extract was comparable with that of 100 mg of Silymarin in terms of blood ALT and AST enzyme. Histopathological screening also revealed that Screw Pine leaf extract at 1000 mg/kg dose is comparable with that of the positive control treated with Silymarin at 100 mg/kg dose in terms of their histhopathological features. The data gathered were statistically analyzed using ANOVA. based on the results of the study there is no significant difference in the Hepatoprotective property between Silymarin and the Screw Pine leaf extract
